Support Girls in STEM

FEM STEM Bahamas is a youth-based nonprofit organization founded in The Bahamas in July 2019. We believe in providing high school girls with the fundamentals for self-growth and career development- specifically in science, technology, mathematics and engineering (STEM) fields. We are an empowerment program focused on making opportunities accessible across The Bahamas. With the continuous shift forward in bridging the gender gap in STEM, this platform acts as a catalyst to take it one step further.

FSB's core programs foster STEM skills development, an understanding of the importance of STEM as a way to solve the world’s major problems, as well as an improved interest in STEM electives, majors, and careers.

Our program includes a wide range of indoor and outdoor STEM-related activities. Our activity-, project-, and problem-based (APB) instructional design centers on hands-on, real-world activities, projects, and problems that help students understand how the knowledge and skills they develop in the programme, and school may be applied in everyday life.

These projects will be issued at the beginning of the semester and completed at the end of the school calendar year. Participants will demonstrate their knowledge and skills by creating a product or presentation based on case studies for a real audience at the end of programme.

During the first three months students will learn the fundamental STEM classes and how to apply what they have learnt on their project and in the final 3 months work directly with their projects. The students’ work is hands-on and collaborative, and decisions about solutions are student-generated. Students communicate to share ideas and redesign their prototypes as needed. Students should be able to generate multiple ideas for solving a problem rather than identifying just one right answer. During meetings students will participate in some variation of the following:

  • Web Development & Programming
  • Environmental Science
  • 3D Printing
  • Biomechanics
  • Project Management Activities
  • Group Activities
  • Virtual Labs
  • Software Demonstrations
  • Brainstorming, Discussions, Oral & Written Presentation
  • Field Trips ( Aliv, BTC, BPL, BEC, Cable Bahamas, URCA, Central Bank, Water & Sewerage, Meteorology Department, RBDF, PMH, Doctors Hospital, DIT, Bahamas Waste, etc.)
